Overview
The partnership between the AU and UNECA with UNFPA based in Addis Ababa aims to support and facilitate the advancement of the AU's Agenda 2063. The Agenda focuses on inclusive growth, and sustainable development while realizing the demographic dividend in Africa. Through joint efforts, the AU under the various Commissions, working with UNFPA in collaboration with other UN entities based in Addis, strives to enhance the well-being and quality of life for the people of the 55 member states. UNFPA has a special focus on sexual and reproductive health, big Data including population dynamics, and prevention of harmful practices as well as gender equality. This takes into consideration both development and Humanitarian situations and the political social environments on the continent.
The UNFPA Representation Office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, operates under the Division Policy and Strategy Division at UNFPA Headquarters in New York. Its main objective is to collaborate with the African Union Commission (AUC), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), and other regional partners to implement the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) agenda beyond 25. The Representational office ensures the integration of the ICPD agenda into various regional and global development frameworks, including the African Union's Agenda 2063, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Maputo Plan of Action for the Operationalization of the Continental Policy Framework on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, and other instruments pertaining to women and youth under Regional Economic Entities.
As a multilateral space, it manages strategies related to inter-governmental processes relevant to UNFPA's mandate on the African continent and global as they impact the continent. Its work aims to achieve the goals of ensuring Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights, Adolescents and young people, Data including population dynamics, averting harmful practices impacting the well-being of women and young people, as well as gender equality and equity in Africa. The office contributes to strengthening the strategic positioning of UNFPA in the region by gaining political support from the AUC and AU Member States in relation to the ICPD, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the AU Agenda 2063 in harmony with other UN entities.
