Dar es Salaam, Tanzania - The African Union Commission (AUC), with the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), will convene its Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Taskforce in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from 2 to 4 May 2018 to review key continental documents and tools as part of its mandate.

The three day meeting will review the Campaign for Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa (CARMMA) Evaluation Report, which covers 10 years since its inception. Together with this, the taskforce will review and validate:

  • The CARMMA Scorecard (a list of MNCH related indicators)
  • The Africa Health Stats list of indicators and,
  • The Africa Union Health Policies and Strategies Accountability Framework

In addition, the meeting will review concept notes and plans for the 2nd International Conference on Maternal, Newborn and Child (ICMNCH), the Mama Africa Awards Initiative and the Organisation of African First Ladies Against HIV/ AIDS (OAFLA), Immunisation Initiative by GAVI - The Vaccine Alliance and the Child Marriage Campaign by the African Union Initiative.

Further to this, the Taskforce will also discuss the issue of harmful practices - particularly Female Genital Mutilation and, engage in dialogue for key recommendations for an Afican Union Campaign on Ending Female Genital Mutilation.

Recommendations of the the MNCH Taskforce will be presented at the 2019 Specialised Technical Committee (STC) on Health, Population and Drug Control (HPDC).
