Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - An induction workshop on the Addis Ababa Declaration on Population and Development (AADPD) was organized by United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) with the support of the African Union and UNFPA from 20th to the 22nd February 2018, to kick start the AADPD +5 review.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Désiré Assogbavi, Chief of UNFPA Liaison Office and Representative to the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) highlighted the importance of the AADPD to Africa’s sustainable development efforts and UNFPA’s commitment to supporting the full implementation of the declaration in Africa. He also made a presentation on population trends and its implications for sustainable development.

Setting the stage to kickstart the process, a number of presentations were delivered. These included an examination of the “Regional Framework for Population and Development”, giving an overview of the AADPD and sharing with participating population experts the work of the Africa Population Experts Committee (APEC).

UNFPA Addis Ababa Liaison Office delivered a presentation on “ICPD Review”, looking at background information and processes involved. The presentation provided a recap of the ICPD Beyond 2014 Review with particular emphasis on Africa and gave an overview of the expected major milestones in the 2018 review, including the draft indicative roadmap.

In addition, an Operational Guide and, Monitoring and Evaluation Framework for AADPD was presented by ECA. The remainder of the workshop was dedicated to presentation and discussions on the tool developed for the review +5 year review of AADPD. Participants were divided into groups to review and share comments and improve the tool.

The AADPD +5 review process will involve national level assessments and reporting, followed by development a continental report and continental Ministerial consultation.
