Policy Dialogue on Ending Violence against Women and Girls Action to Guarantee Women’s Safety

On 10 December 2020, African Union Commission - Women, Gender and Development Directorate, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights  (OHCHR) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) organized a virtual multi-stakeholder policy dialogue under the theme “Ending Violence against Women and Girls: Action to Guarantee Women’s Safety in Africa”.

UNFPA Liaison Office to the African Union and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNFPAELO) convened a High-Level Continental Dialogue for the launch of the State of World Population Report (SWOP) 2020 in Africa. The virtual meeting was held on the 28th of August 2020 and gathered over 120 participants from different backgrounds.

State of World Population 2019

State of World Population Report

Fifty years ago, it was hard for women to obtain contraception and relatively easy to die giving birth. Many women were unable to decide whom and when to marry, and when or whether to have children.

A worldwide movement to give women real choices in life culminated in the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), where a consensus was reached about the links between women’s empowerment, sexual and reproductive health, and rights and sustainable development.

Female Genital Mutilation in Africa: Status Fact Sheet

More girls in Africa experience female genital mutilation between the ages of 0 - 14 years than other age brackets. Critical progres is being made. Today, a girl is about 1/3 less likely to be cut
than 30 years ago. The challenge is sustaining these achievements.
